Friends of the Library

Friends of Peabody Memorial Library was organized in December 2006.  Several area residents believed the library could benefit from additional help - financial as well as volunteer time - to reach its goals serving the community.

We are a non-profit organization with regularly scheduled meetings and annual membership dues/donations.  We are a members of FOLUSA (Friends of Libraries USA) and Maine Friends of Libraries.

What Friends do:

• Focus community awareness on the services and needs of the library;

• Promote public support of the library;

• Conduct fund raising activities; funds are used to enhance library services and programs;

• Stimulate increased usage and appreciation of the library, and thus help enrich the lives of the community.

During the past year Friends funds purchased new books for children and teens, helped buy a new graphic printer and high speed copier, provided for summer and fall childrens' programs, the Christmas program and decorations.  Friends also contributed many hours of volunteer time to support programs, receptions, and extra library staffing.

Programs

Books for Babies

In 2007, Friends began "Books for Babies", a program adopted from FOLUSA. Each newborn in Jonesport and Beals receives a lovely handmade appliqued booktote made by one of our members. Tucked inside is a beautiful new hardcover Mother Goose Rhyme book, a "Born to Read" baby teeshirt, literature about the Imagination Library and other information about reading to their child. New parents are notified by mail to pick up their gift at the library. When the parents pick up the gift they are encouraged to sign up their new baby for the Imagination Library.  Christmas in the Library will be supported by Friends again this year.

 Community Book Discussion Group

Join the group for a lively, interesting disucssion each month at the library. Limited copies are available for loan at the library or you may purchase your own.
